History
After BMW introduced the 528, the culmination of the 5-series, in 1975, Alpina left no time to waste. The new 1B Alpina six-cylinder 3.0 transformed the four-door sedan into a force to be reckoned with. The Group 1B line, also known as the “Group 1 Francorchamps line”, was the successor to the world-renowned Group 2 line. Where the Group 2’s were much pricier, riskier, more modified (e.g. extended wheel arches and more freedom in regulations), the 1B’s were developed to be a more affordable, safer and less modified race car.
The Dutch general BMW importer, N.V. Alimpo, ordered one of the BMW 530i US Group 1B in 1977. The 525i base of this vehicle was then upgraded to include the original Alpina engine with Alpina pistons and 300 degree camshaft. In addition, the front oil cooler, the modified air flow meter, the lock, the differential cooling, as well as the steering wheel all came from Alpina.
Initially driven by Dutch Eddy Fresco, the car mostly competed in the Dutch and Belgian Touringcar championships. Fresco’s first podium finish with the car took place on July 17th 1977, when he finished in 3rd place overall in the Dutch Touringcar championship at Circuit Zandvoort. Around one year later Eddy Fresco and Rob Slotemaker competed in the European Championship at Circuit Zandvoort and achieved the car’s best finish to date; 2nd place in Division 4 (up until 300ccm) and 7th place overall, merely falling behind the notably faster Group 2 cars.
In late ’78, fellow Dutchman Hans Maasland purchased the car and competed twice with the 530i in the 24H Spa. In ’79 Maasland competed with Slotemaker yet they did not finish due to an incident. In ’81 Maasland finished 12th in division and 18th overall with Rien and Fred Frankenhout.
