History
With its remarkable GT car outline and technically-advanced under bonnet engineering, this BMW 320 Group 5 is truly the best of both worlds! The so-called ‘silhouette cars’ were constructed by BMW for the two-litre class and only a little over 30 factory 320 Group 5’s were produced. Weighing around 920 Kg and sporting a proper M12/7 F2 motor, the 320 Group 5 is a force to be reckoned with!
With Chassis number 07, this car was built by BMW Motorsport for Group 5 (Division 2; up to 2000cc). It was first owned and run by Hohmann Auto Technik (HAT) and appeared in the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterchaft (DRM) in 1977 for its very first competition season. Under Ronnie Peterson and Mario Ketterers driving, the car competed in 8 races that season and got a podium finish at 3rd place!

’77 DRM results
13/03/1977 – Bergisher Lowe Zolder – Peter Bienefeld – 8th
27/03/1977 – Goodyear 300km Rennen Nurburgring – Ronnie Peterson – 3rd (Division 2)
01/05/1977 – ADAC Eifelrennen Nurburgring – Ronnie Peterson – DNF
08/05/1977 – ADAC Super Sport Rennen Kassel-Caiden Airfield – Mario Ketterer – 9th
22/05/1977 – Flugplatzrennen Mainz-Finten – Jochen Dauer – 11th
03/07/1977 – Norisring Nurnberg – Rudolf Doetsch – 3rd
24/07/1977 – ADAC Flugplatzrennen Diepholz – Mario Ketterer – 7th
30/07/1977 – Grosser Preis von Deutschland Hockenheim – Mario Ketterer – 6th

After the ’77 season, the car changed ownership various times. In ’78 Helmut Bross acquired the car and had various drivers compete with it in the DRM under the HAT banner. The year after (1979) Tom Walkinshaw helped arrange the sale of the car to Gerry Tyack of Cewfew Garage in the UK who used the car in Hillclimbs. Later the car became property of Brian Chatfield who
competed all thoughout the 80’s in various UK competitions. The car was then taken off of Chatfield’s hands by Tom Walkinshaw in ’93. Subsequent owners were Munich Legends and Kevin Underwood. The current owner purchased the car (as a rolling chassis) in 2007.

Restoration and Specs
The current owner has then undertaken the challenge of restoring the car back to its 1977 specifications. The restoration took place from 2011 till completion in 2017 and was performed by Melbourne Performance Centre in Australia. A full restoration took place and absolutely no part was left untouched; the original bodywork was first repaired, then moulds were made, and lastly a new bodywork was created. The roll cage has been updated to FIA spec and a 100 litre fuel cell was fitted to replace the alloy tank. A new wiring loom was created and new wheels have been purchased from BBS. Melbourne Performance Centre has done a terrific job restoring the car and have made sure all components have been replaced or renovated. Since completion the car has been used sparingly, with its last event being Le Mans Classic 2023.
